Online Permitting Applications
What’s Happening?
With Online Permitting, you can apply from any device (computer or tablet) that has an internet connection.
Our online process guides you through submitting your permit with documents, obtaining approval, downloading the permit via email, making payments, scheduling inspections, and finalizing everything.
What will I need to do?
Some applications may require additional documentation, which can be downloaded from the Forms tab.
Checklists and required uploads are available in the Checklist tab, and the software provides direct links.
What If I Don’t Have Internet Access?
You are welcome to come to Town Hall and use a kiosk computer in our Building Department.

Code and Contractor Requirements
By submitting this application, the applicant acknowledges and agrees to the following conditions:
- Proof of required licensure and insurance must be submitted with this application.
- Applications submitted without proper documentation will not be processed.
- All work shall comply with MGL Chapter 143, the Massachusetts Plumbing & Gas Code, and the National Electrical Code (NEC), including all Massachusetts amendments.
Fees & Payment
- All permit fees must be paid in full prior to permit issuance.
- All fees are non‑refundable.
- Renewal fees are assessed at the same rate as the original permit.
Permit Scope
- Separate permits are required for each dwelling unit or tenant space.
- Any work commenced without a permit is subject to a penalty of double the standard permit fee
Permit Term
- Permits are valid for six (6) months from the date of issuance.
- A one‑time extension of up to one (1) year may be granted upon approval due to documented hardship.
Inspections
All required inspections must be scheduled and attended by the licensed professional of record UNLESS otherwise agreed upon by the inspector.
Trade-Specific Requirements
- Solar installations must be performed by appropriately licensed professionals.
- Fire alarm work not associated with an active building permit requires the electrician to obtain a building permit under their license.
- LP gas regulator installations require a Fire Department permit prior to the start of work.
Zoning Board of Appeals (if applicable)
- ZBA Application Fee: $200 Check payable to: Town of Ashby
- ZBA applications may be submitted for: Special Permit & Variance
- Appeal of an Administrative Officer’s Decision
- Applications must be filed with the Town Clerk for date stamping and are then forwarded to the Zoning Board of Appeals for hearing.
- The Town Clerk retains a copy of the application.
- The application fee is submitted to the ZBA.
- Some applications require a certified Abutters List, obtained from the Assessor’s Office. $10, payable to the Assessor’s Office per Abutters list.

- Insurance refusing to cover damage from unpermitted work

- Criminal charges
- Inspectors check for code compliance and may require re-inspection if work fails.
